| Description | Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a fungus, has only been described fairly recently as a member of the phylum Chytridiales. It was identified as a cause of chytridiomycosis, which affects top layers of skin in amphibians causing hyperkeratosis, among other symptoms. Disruption of electrolyte homeostasis has been suggested as the pathophysiology underlying chytridiomycosis. Found initially in amphibian populations in Australia and Central America, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been implicated in the decline of frog populations across the globe. It is the only chytrid species known to parasitize vertebrates. The available genome sequence of strain JAM81 was submitted in 2009. |
