| Description | One of the world's most expensive edible fungi, the Perigord black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) is a renowned gastronomic delicacy. Symbiotically associated with the roots of deciduous trees (especially oak), it is native to southern Europe, but is also cultivated in other regions of the world such as Australia, New Zealand and North America. The genome was sequenced by Genoscape in 2010, and with a size of 125 Mb is one of the most complex fungal genomes sequenced to date. It is notable for having a relatively low gene number (approximately 7,500) and a high proportion of transposable elements (estimated to be 58% of the genome). |
