Description Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a fission yeast, belongs to the order Schizosaccharomycetales in the phylum Ascomycota. Since the 1950s it has served as a model organism for studying cell cycle regulation, cell division and DNA repair. The name pombe, which means beer in Swahili, goes back to the original isolation of S. pombe from millet beer.
