| Description | Ajellomyces dermatitidis (syn. Blastomyces dermatitidis) causes the rare disease blastomycosis in humans and animals. The fungus lives in the soil and wet, rotting wood and blastomycosis is contracted by inhaling the spores. Like all species from the Ajellomycetaceae the fungus is thermally dimorphic, switching from a mould-like growth form to a yeast-like growth in the animal host. Most infected people do not display any symptoms of the disease but in immunocompromised individuals the disease can spread from the lungs to other organs of the body and can be fatal if left untreated. The current assembly provided by the Broad Institute is the whole genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing of A. dermatitidis strain ER-3 at 9.4X coverage. |
