Description Laetiporus species can live parasitically on many types of wood. Laetiporus sulphurous is a saprotrophic, 'brown-rot' fungus of the taxonomic group Polyporales. Brown-rot fungi degrade the cellulose and hemicellulose components of wood leaving the recalcitrant lignin fraction behind, while 'white-rot' fungi degrade all components of plant cell wall including lignin. It can grow on many hardwood species and forms beautiful yellow bracketed fruiting bodies that can weigh up to several kilograms. It is a popular edible mushroom all over Europe and North America and is referred to as 'chicken of the woods'. The genome of Laetiporus sulphureus 93-53 and several other Polyporales species was sequenced in 2015 to better understand the evolution of the wood-decay enzymatic apparatus in these fungi.
