| Description | The genome of Calocera viscosa was sequenced as a part of multi genome saprotrophic fungus sequencing project focused on understanding the diversity in decaying mechanisms, phylogenetic relationships and developmental evolution. This genome was predicted to code for one of the lowest numbers of lignocellulose decomposing carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZys). Although Calocera viscosa has been implicated in causing white rot in soil-block tests, however based on its gene content, it resembles typical brown-rot fungi (Brown-rot fungi degrade cellulose and hemicellulose components of wood leaving the recalcitrant lignin fraction behind, while White-rot fungi degrade all components of plant cell wall including lignin). It also lacks Auxiliary Activity Family 2 (lignin degradation), the hallmark gene family of white-rot species as well as AA9 LPMOs (lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases). |
