| Description | Fibulorhizoctonia are a type of saprotrophic fungus implicated in the spoilage of vegetables in cold storage facilities. Members of this species are also reported to be termite symbionts. Sclerotia of this corticioid fungus were identified as brown balls in termite nests mimicking termite eggs The genome of this fungus encodes oxidoreductases which act on lignin or its derivatives suggesting ligninolytic activities characteristic of 'white-rot' fungi. The genome is predicted to code for ~33000 proteins and is the largest Agaricomycete genome sequenced so far, 30% larger than the genome of the ectomycorrhizal species Laccaria bicolor. Tandem and segmental duplications are suggested to be the reason for the exceptional genome size. |
