| Description | Mycosphaerella eumusae (Pseudocercospora eumusae) is a pathogenic fungus which causes the immensely destructive eumusae leaf spot disease of banana. The disease originated in Southeast Asia but has since spread to sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The highly aggressive form of the infection by the fungus can result in up to 40% loss in the yield. P. eumusae is a highly virulent species in comparison to the less damaging Pseudocercospora musae. P. eumusae is known to infect crops resistant to both P. musae and P. fijiensis. Together these species cause Sigatoka disease complex of banana (Pseudocercospora musae: yellow sigatoka, Pseudocercospora eumusae: eumusae leaf spot and Pseudocercospora fijiensis: black sigatoka). The reported size of P. eumusae is ~54 Mb and is the smallest when compared to related species (P. musae ~83 Mb and P. fijiensis ~74 Mb). The difference in genome size arises due to difference in repeat elements, particularly transposable elements. |
