Description Coccidioides immitis is a pathogenic ascomycete fungus endemic to desert regions of the southwestern United States, Mexico and South America. In humans, inhalation of soil spores can cause the life-threatening disease coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever. Unlike most other ascomycete fungi, pathogenic Coccidiodes species are primarily associated with mammals rather than plants. It is hoped that genomic analysis will uncover the evolution of these novel pathogenic traits and aid treatment of coccidioidomycosis. The genome of C. immitis RS strain was released in 2009. It is 29 Mb in size and contains approximately 10,355 protein-coding genes.
