| Description | The Poplar leaf rust fungus Melampsora larici-populina (Pucciniales, Melampsoraceae) is from a genus of leaf rusts that infect poplar. These obligate biotrophs have a serious impact on the development of bioenergy programs based upon poplars due to the absence of a resistant or tolerant host species. The sequenced genome of M. larici-populina is 101Mb with 16,399 predicted proteins. The relatively large genome compared to other sequenced basidiomycete genomes possibly results from the presence of a large number or transposable elements which form almost 45% of the genome. In M. larici-populina these are generally class II terminal inverted repeat DNA transposons. |
