| Description | Pyrenophora teres is a necrotrophic plant pathogen within the class Dothideomycetes and order Pleosporales. It is the causal agent of net blotch which is one of the most important diseases in barley resulting in 10-20% yield lost worldwide. This species exists in two morphologically indistinguishable but genetically distinct forms: P. teres f. teres (net form of net blotch) and P. teres f. maculata (spot form of net blotch). The genome of P. teres f. teres is 41.95 Mb and contains 11,799 genes (based on 50 amino acids or more). The relatively large genome compared to other sequenced Pleosporales may be due to the presence of new classes of transposable elements in its genome as well as a large number of novel repeats. |
