Description Rhizopus delemar belongs to the order Mucorales, commonly known as pin molds, in the phylum Zygomycota. It is a mold that can typically be found on decaying food, like vegetables, fruit and bread, compost etc. It is also the most important causal agent of mucormycosis. Mucormycosis can affect the sinuses and brain (rhinocerebral infection), the lung (pulmonary infection) or other parts of the body. The genome of strain 99-880 was published in 2009. It comprises 45 Mb and about 14,000 predicted protein-coding genes. The genome contains a high proportion of repetitive transposable element sequences. It is thought to have undergone a whole genome duplication event followed by massive gene loss.
