Description Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici belongs to the order Puccinales in the phylum Basidiomycota, commonly known as rust fungi. The name rust fungus goes back to the usually rust-colored urediniospores. As an obligate biotroph, P. graminis is of economic importance due to its destructive potential as a plant pathogen. Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici is the causal agent of wheat stem rust. As infectious spores, urediniospores play a crucial part in the life cycle of the fungus; they can cause the epidemic spread of the fungus in large contiguous areas. The genome of strain CDL 75-36-700-3 race SCCL was published in 2011 based on DNA extracted from urediniospores. It comprises 86.6 Mb. The unusually large size of the genome was attributed to transposable elements which make up almost 45% of the genome.
