| Description | The white button mushroom Agaricus bisporus (Agaricaceae) is a terricolous secondary decomposer of leaf and needle litter. It is the preferred fungal model for adaptation, persistence, and growth in humic-rich environment where it takes advantage of the nutrients not readily available to primary decomposers. The variety A. bisporus var. burnettii was delineated from the species based upon morphological and genetic studies of specimens found in the Sonoran Desert of California. The genome of var. burnettii is estimated to be 32.6 Mb with 11,289 protein-coding genes. Analysis and comparison with A. bisporus var. bisporus suggest that the species genome encodes a full repertoire of polysaccharide-degrading enzymes similar to that of wood-decayers, but their expression varies under different growth conditions revealing its ability to adapt to its environment. |
